Si tratta di un genere di roditori dalle abitudini estreme in grado di vivere e riprodursi in un ambiente inospitale come l'alta montagna, dove si può trovare tra i 1.500 e i 3.000 metri di altitudine. Durante il letargo la loro temperatura corporea scende da 35 a meno di 5 gradi, il cuore rallenta da 130 a 15 battiti al minuto e la respirazione diviene appena percettibile. Le scorte di grasso corporeo accumulate durante l'estate vengono lentamente consumate e per sei mesi le marmotte dormono profondamente.Si svegliano pochissime volte e soltanto per una temperatura della tana troppo bassa. Marmots typically live in burrows (often within rockpiles, particularly in the case of the Yellow-bellied marmot), and hibernate there through the winter.
